Interview with British artist Curtis Holder in new Glyn Philpot episode of Inside Art on the Sky Arts channel

I will be appearing in the new series of Inside Art on the Sky Arts channel on Monday 19th September in an episode that explores the current ‘Glyn Philpot: Flesh and Spirit’ exhibition at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester.

It’s the first major exhibition of work by the British artist in nearly 40 years, charting his development from Edwardian society portraits to a radically modernist style in the 1930s. The exhibition features portraits of actors, dancers, poets, society hostesses, male lovers and friends, and examines Philpot’s contribution to the representation of Black sitters from the 1910s to 1930s, as well as his exploration of both queer and religious subjects.

Earlier this year I was invited by Gallery Director Simon Martin to be an advisor during the development of the exhibition which explores how the artist’s drawings, paintings and sculptures of Black sitters relate to wider dialogues about identity and representation in modern art.

As part of the Inside Art programme, presenter and art historian Kate Bryan talks to me about my experience of Philpot’s work and my involvement in the exhibition.

You can watch ‘Inside Art: Glyn Philpot at Pallant House’ on Sky Arts at 7pm on Monday 19th September. The exhibition is on at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester until 23 October.
