Curtis Holder joins The National Theatre as artist-in-residence for their latest production ‘The Corn Is Green’.

I was honoured to be invited by National Theatre Director, Dominic Cooke, to work as artist-in-residence at The National Theatre in London during the production of his latest play The Corn Is Green by Emlyn Williams.

Throughout February and March I have been documenting the progress of the production through hundreds of rapid gestural drawings that capture the motion and emotion of the actors during rehearsals., from script reading to music and dance practice. It has been such an exciting opportunity to capture the life of the rehearsal room on paper.

With exclusive access to the costume, props and hair and make-up departments, I have also been able to record the incredibly dedicated and skilled work that goes on behind the scenes.

A selection of the drawings created during my residency will be stored for prosperity in the National Theatre archives and I am exploring ideas to develop a body of large multilayered artworks based on the experience. So watch this space!
